Charles H. Culp Deceased

Westport resident Charles Harrison Culp, died Wednesday, March 10. He was 78.

A native of Durham, N.C., Culp was predeceased by parents Benjamin and Mary (Foster) Culp. He and his wife Barbara W. Culp enjoyed 56 years of marriage, spending the last 33 years in Westport.

He was a graduate of Duke University and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.

Board to Approve Contract to Make Road Improvements

The Board of Selectmen, Traffic Authority and Water Pollution Control Authority will hold a special public hearing at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday in Room 201A of the Westport Town Hall for the following purpose:

1. To take such action as the meeting may determine to approve the award of a contract to FGB Construction Company, Inc. as relates to the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act of 2009 for various pavement preservation improvements on Cross Highway, Long Lots Road and Newtown Turnpike.

AARP 'Tax Aide' Program Comes to Senior Center

The AARP Foundation offers income tax assistance through its "Tax Aide" program administered in conjunction with the IRS. Assistance is available at the Center for Senior Activities, by appointment only, each Wednesday through April 14 for ages 60 and older, with emphasis on low- and middle-income households.

All 2009 tax forms (W-2s, 1099s, brokerage statements, etc.), Social Security and other official identification, and 2008 returns (if possible) should be brought to the one-hour appointment.

Town Waives Fee for Disposal of Yard Waste

Public Works Director Stephen Edwards announced today that the fee for residents to dispose of yard waste at the Bayberry Lane Yard Waste Site will be waived until Saturday March 20. The fee will not be waived for commercial haulers.

Parks and Recreation Registration Postponed

Due to the severity of the weekend storm causing town-wide power outages, the Parks and Recreation Department has postponed online program registration until Monday, March 22, beginning at 9:00 a.m.

In office registration will be moved to Monday, March 29. The town apologizes in advance for any inconvenience.

Mid Fairfield CT Stars Girls Hockey Headed to Nationals

The Mid Fairfield CT Stars Girls Hockey U12 Team won the New England Regionals today. Westporter Kate Paliotta is on the team. The girls now advance to the National Championships.

Pete Powell Dinner Postponed Until Further Notice

The retirement dinner for Pete Powell, who served as president/CEO of Homes with Hope for 22 years has been postponed until further notice.

"We are trying to find a good date for the event and will advise all ticket holders and interested friends of Homes With Hope as soon as possible," Homes with Hope president elect Jeffrey Wieser said in an e-mail Sunday.

Westport Public Schools Closed Monday

Superintendent of Westport Public Schools Dr. Elliott Landon has announced schools will be closed Monday due to Saturday's storm that has caused many downed trees, wires and dangerous driving conditions.

The school system's offices will be open.

All after-school activities will be canceled or rescheduled, Landon said.
