5 Things All About Westport: July 1

Baron's South Committee meets this morning, town fireworks this evening and more

  • The Baron's South Committee will meet at 9:30 a.m. at Town Hall Room 309. The committee is expected to continue work on a request for proposal for bids for the Baron’s South property, where the Board of Selectmen hopes to build a 66 unit senior housing development, with 60 percent of units offered as affordable housing, as well as an 84-bed nursing facility. in June, the Representative Town Meeting voted 24-5 to uphold set of changes to the town zoning regulations, known as Text Amendment 625, which paves the way for the project, pending a bidding process and local approvals.
  • Westport will hold its annual Fourth of July fireworks display this evening at Compo Beach. Tickets for the event can be purchased at the Police Station and Parks & Rec Office, Town Hall. Spectators are advised to arrive early, as traffic delays are inevitable. The beach will open to ticket holders by 5 p.m. Vehicles without a ticket will not be able to proceed beyond the Minuteman statue. Shuttle buses will run from Longshore Park by the Marina to Compo Beach. After the fireworks end, two-way traffic will be suspended on Compo Beach Road and South Compo Road to the intersection of Greens Farms Road. There will be two lanes of northbound traffic on these streets until traffic from the beach is cleared.
  • Single stream recycling begins today in Westport. That means residents can deposit a wider range of materials for recycling – such as juice cartons and cereal boxes – into their blue recycle bins. In addition residents no longer have to bundle different types materials separately — everything can go into the blue bins in mixed fashion. For more information, check out this on Westport Patch.
  • The Westport Country Playhouse celebrated its 80th birthday on Wednesday with a special party featuring cake, champagne and balloons. The theater officially opened its doors June 29, 1931 and welcomed audiences to its first production, “The Streets of New York,” starring Dorothy Gish. , which included theater staff and local and state officials.
  • An exhibit by internationally acclaimed environmental artists Christo and the late Jeanne-Claude opened yesterday at the Westport Arts Center. The exhibit features two works in progress by the artists, “Over the River, Project for the Arkansas River, State of Colorado” and “The Mastaba, Project for the United Arab Emirates.” It also features original works created in preparation for the two upcoming projects that Christo plans to complete in the coming decade. The exhibit runs through Sept. 4.
