Blockbuster Leaving Westport Soon

In the meantime, everything is on sale.

Blockbuster, the brick and mortar movie rental store on 1505 Post Road E., will be closing as soon as Sunday, according to a store employee. Everything is on sale, from DVDs to fixtures to the gumball machine.

The national chain has been plagued by bankruptcy and shuttered stores as other services took over the market. NetFlix, which offers streaming video and direct movies mailings, continues to grow in popularity, and the ubiquitous Redbox, which is a vending machine for DVDs and Blu-rays, has also become commonplace.

Earlier this week, the DISH Network bought Blockbuster for $320 million. The new owners say they want to keep 600 stores open. At the time of the purchase, there were 1,700 stores. Westport, it seems, did not make the cut.
