Joseloff/Kassen Win Selectmen Race
The official results are in.
Standing before about 50 supporters Tuesday night, the newly re-elected Gordon F. Joseloff thanked those who gathered at the Riverside Avenue Democratic headquarters to celebrate his win for First Selectman.
"It's very gratifying," Joseloff said. "The margin could have been better. ... But this gives us the opportunity to keep doing what we're doing."
Joseloff spoke of keeping Westport green and creating affordable housing for seniors.
Joseloff and running mate Shelly A. Kassen earned 3,676 votes or about 52 percent of the total vote. Their Republican challengers, R. Gavin S. Anderson and Kristin T. LaFleur, lost by 434 votes, earning about 46 percent of the total vote.
Write-in candidate John James Izzo Sr. earned 2 percent of the total vote with 172 ballots cast for him.
"Now it's back to work," Joseloff said.
His first order of business?
"I get to meet with second graders tomorrow at the Historical Society," he said.
As for Kassen, she plans to recover from the campaign. She said she's grateful for the chance to serve another four years.
"I'd like to thank the community for supporting us and affirming Gordon's leadership," she said.
Before the official results were tallied, Anderson and LaFleur conceded to the incumbents at the Democratic headquarters.
"I respect them so much for a fair win and a good win," Anderson said to the crowd. "I will do my utmost to improve Westport and I'm proud to be a part of that."
Anderson will serve on the Board of Selectmen as the third selectman.
LaFleur, who finished her last meeting with the Board of Education Monday, said she was disappointed with the results but pleased all the candidates ran a good race.
"I think I'm going to brush up on my Italian, relax and, sure, I'll find something to do in town," she said, adding that she'd like to return to being more involved in the Westport Young Women's League.
The town has not seen the last of LaFleur.
"I'm probably not done with this yet," she said, referring to a possible future run for office.
