Staples Boys Basketball has New Look

Wreckers will be led by senior captains Gabe Seidman, Luke Yeager and forward Jake Felman.

After barely missing the FCIAC playoffs last season, the surprise Staples Wreckers boys basketball team begins the 2010-11 campaign tonight with a much different look.

Staples has lost five players from last year's squad, including three starters,  as center Grant Fenton moved to Florida, forward Brendan Rankowitz graduated and point guard Frankie Bergonzi was forced to stop playing due to his commitment to play soccer at Colgate University.

Additionally, big man Andreas Bub also gave up the sport and up-and-coming junior Isak Hrvacic is lost for the season due to a knee injury.

The key returning pieces for the Wreckers this season are senior captains Gabe Seidman, Luke Yeager and forward Jake Felman. Both Seidman and Yeager averaged double figures last year and Felman was a spark for the Wreckers, who went 10-11 and lost to Windsor in the first round of the CIAC Class LL state tournament.

The season was one to remember for Staples, which was eliminated from the playoffs on the final day of the regular season with a three-point loss at FCIAC powerhouse Trinity Catholic.

The situation was quite a turnaround from the way the season started when the Wreckers  lost by 45 points to Bridgeport Central.

Highlighting the 2009-10 season was a road win at Stamford in overtime and a wild victory over Ridgefield at home.

Staples will look to continue to build from the success of last season when it was the 27th seed in the Class LL tournament.

With head coach Colin Devine leading the way, Staples has some new players to watch this season.

Joining Seidman and Yeager are senior guards Daniel "D" Scanlon and Rob Dibarto as well as junior forward Mike Argosh.

Argosh will be a key for the Wreckers this season after seeing time in the rotation as a sophomore last season. The forward will most likely be playing down low without Fenton, Bub or Adam Levinson on the squad this season.

Staples' quest for an FCIAC playoff berth begins tonight on the road against the Ridgefield Tigers.

This matchup has become a rivalry over the past years. However, this year lacks the big names with Tiger star Doug Delbene having graduated last year and Tommy Jordan leaving early for football at the University of Florida.
