Westport May Apply For State Grant For New Sidewalks

Construction of new sidewalks connecting the various sections of downtown is a critical piece of the Downtown 2020 Committee's proposed revitalization plans.

's is hoping to persude the Town to submit an application to the state Office of Policy and Management for a grant of up to $500,000 from the state's Main Street Investment Fund for construction of new sidewalks and other improvements in the downtown area, but it first needs the support of the .

Construction of new sidewalks connecting the of is a critical piece of the 's proposed revitalization plans. According to a report in the Westport News the group is calling for a total of approximately 6,200 linear feet of new sidewalk on Main Street next to Veterans Green; on Post Road West from Ludlow Road to Wright Street; on Imperial Avenue from Thomas Road to Gault Avenue; and on Elm Street and on Myrtle Avenue.

In addition the Committee wants to rebuild the existing sidewalk on Main Street from Avery Place to Canal Street, add granite curbing on Main Street between Post Road East and Avery Place; and install new decorative light poles and , according to the report.

The application must be filed with the OPM by Sept. 28. The RTM has added the item to the agenda for its Aug. 7 meeting.
