Westport Wellness Massage Offers Main Street Oasis

In addition to a little retail therapy, downtown shoppers now have the opportunity to indulge in a therapeutic massage.

Westport Wellness Massage opened earlier this month in a cozy nook on the lower level of 190 Main St. With a focus on the restorative and health benefits of massage, the spa offers a variety of traditional massage options, body treatments and ear candling, an alternative health practice that is believed to relieve ear pain and headaches.

“Ear candle therapy reduces ear problems and headaches by drawing out earwax and toxins from the body,” explains spa manager, Barbie Zhang.

The process involves inserting a cone shaped candle into the ear at a 45 degree angle, and lighting the exterior end of the candle. As the candle burns, ear wax, bacteria and other substances are drawn out from the ear canal.  Zhang says that there is absolutely no discomfort involved in the process and describes the treatment as “relaxing.”

Zhang and the three massage therapists who work at the spa reside in Queens, N.Y., and make the daily commute to Westport.

“We opened here because Westport is a good place to do business,” said Zhang.  “There are a lot of people shopping in this area, so it brings better business to the spa.”

According to Zhang, each of the licensed therapists on staff has several years of bodywork experience including extensive training at Body Concepts Wellness Institute in New Jersey, where students are required to undergo more than 600 hours of training that includes body mechanics, various massage techniques, basic physiology, and biology.

In addition to its stress relieving properties, Zhang says that massage has a plethora of health benefits, “It is very good for the lower back. Many people come in with rotator cuff injuries. The deep tissue massage really helps. Lymphatic Drainage Massage encourages the lymphatic system to eliminate waste products, excess fluids and bacteria.”

A variety of scrubs and body wrap treatments are also offered – again, with an emphasis on health. A 'Deep Sea' treatment involves a mud wrap which Zhang says both detoxifies and nourishes the skin. The Organic Lavender Scrub has “healing properties for the mental, emotional, physical, and metaphysical states.”

Westport Wellness Massage offers their massages in 45, 60 and 90 minute sessions and their body treatments are 75 and 90 minutes.  They are running introductory specials during April in honor of their grand opening.
