Republicans will go to the polls tomorrow to vote for their presidential candidate to face Barack Obama in November. But with Rick Santorum suspending his campaign (he's still on the ballot), and Newt Gringrich and Ron Paul considered long-shots, at best, Mitt Romney is now the "de facto" nominee for president for the GOP — thus turnout at the polls is expected to be low. Voters in the Fourth Congressional District are more interested in the outcome of the tight race between Republican candidates Chris Meek and Steve Obsitnik, who are both vying to become the Party's choice to run against Rep. Jim Himes, a Democrat who has held the House seat for the past two terms. Both men say they are the Party's best shot at defeating Himes, as they …

When asked during a debate Sunday if they would support, as a concept, a federal law requiring Catholic hospitals to perform abortions, some Democratic Senate candidates indicated they would. The bishops object.
On Sunday, some Democratic candidates for U.S. Senate said they'd favor the concept of a federal law requiring even Catholic hospitals to perform abortions. Now, the state's Catholic bishops are objecting. Connecticut's Catholic bishops—including Bishop William Lori, who announced in March that he is leaving the Roman Catholic Diocese of Bridgeport to become archbishop of the Baltimore Archdiocese—have issued a statement expressing their dismay after all five Democratic candidates said during Sunday's "Face the State" debate that they would support legislation forcing Catholic hospitals to perform abortions. "If it is their [the candidates'] position that our hospitals should be forced by law or regulations to provide abortions in spite …

The current ‘war between women’ pitting Hilary Rosen against Ann Romney is deflecting attention from the true ‘war ON women’ and distracting us from the real question—Who are we voting for?
[Editor's Note: Please keep an eye out later this week for "Patch Back," a new feature from Lisa Bigelow that will serve as response piece to certain installments of Heather's "Patch In."] The question isn’t whether Ann Romney ever ‘worked’ a day in her whole life, but: Does her husband Mitt truly give a rat’s ass about anyone—especially women—in the 99 percent? This made-up battle between working moms and stay-at-home-moms is causing people of every gender to lose focus on more important issues—namely whether politicians are advocating stripping rights from women (like reproductive health choices) or finding ways to penalize them and hold them back (withholding equal pay) or simply having a double standard when it comes to lower- vs. …

A Quinnipiac poll breaks down the U.S. Senate race and Republican presidential primary.
A Quinnipiac University poll shows Linda McMahon leads former U.S. Rep Christopher Shays by a 51-42 margin, but falters against Democrats compared to her opponent. In the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate, U.S. Rep. Christopher Murphy, D-5, leads with 37 of the vote, followed by former Secretary of State Susan Bysiewicz with 25 percent and State Rep. William Tong with 4 percent. Polling results for possible November matchups: “Congressman Christopher Shays has narrowed the gap with Linda McMahon from 15 points to 9 points. Nutrient rich fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts and juices go into Green & Tonic's drinks, and they sell wraps and salads, too, from the tiny shop they've just opened around the corner from Chunky Pam's and across the street from Darien Sport Shop.
After Greenwich businessman Jeffrey Pandolfino sold his Cos Cob catering company, Plum Pure Foods, he thought a bit about what he wanted to do next, and he also started dieting. As he kept thinking about business opportunities, his dieting started him on an exploration of juicing—turning fruits, vegetables, grains and even nuts into blended juices that would help him create drinks with exacting standards of nutrition. And tastiness. That exploration not only took some pounds off Pandolfino—it also spawned his next business, Green & Tonic, which he started with some friends two years ago. Until now, the company has operated without a storefront, selling organic, cold-pressed juice, tea, protein bars, soups, salads and shakes. Now Green & …

The legislation would allow residents to register on Election Day and on the Internet, according to the Connecticut Mirror.
Gov. Dannel Malloy and Secretary of the State Denise Merrill announced on Monday a call for legislation that would make it easier for Connecticut residents to register to vote and submit absentee ballots, according to the Connecticut Mirror. The proposed legislation would allow voter registration on Election Day, online voter registration and increased penalties for those found guilty of blocking or impeding voter access. “In the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., we have a tremendous opportunity this year to expand access to the ballot box to the many citizens of our state who face barriers to voting because their busy working lives make it difficult to register or appear at their polling place on Election Day," Merrill said in a …

Obsitnik says he decided to run for office “because I can no longer stand by and watch the status quo politics continue to lead us away from the American Dream.”
Westport businessman Steve Obsitnik is officially seeking the Republican nomination to run for the 4th Congressional District seat next year. The seat is currently held by two-term Democrat Jim Himes. On the home page of his campaign website, Obsitnik says he decided to run for office “because I can no longer stand by and watch the status quo politics continue to lead us away from the American Dream.” "We need an optimist and leader who knows that we can revitalize our economy, create results-based policies, and hold Washington accountable,” he states. “My background in business, education and the military makes me uniquely able to tackle these very real problems that affect both our district and our nation.” Obsitnik is a member of the …
