Modern day intimate relationships are challenging.  Time, technology and temptations of all kinds demand our attention and divert us from intimacy.  Relationships struggle to survive and people forget what it feels like to be happy and desire intimacy.

On Wednesday, February 29 at 7pm at The Westport Inn, Chabad of Westport hosts an evening of considered thinking and talking about intimacy and relationships:  “Intimate Relationships, A Modern Day Challenge.” This program marks the 10^th in an annual series of family and parenting conferences hosted by the Chabad of Westport.  Past speakers have included Wendy Mogel, author of The Blessing Of A Skinned Knee, Queen Bees and Wannabees author Rosalind Weissman, and Elaine Maizlish who wrote How To Talk So Kids Will Listen. Featured speakers at this year’s conference include Rebbetzin Goldy Plotkin and internationally acclaimed, clinical sexologist and couples and sex therapist, Dr. Marlene Wasserman, aka, “Dr. Eve.”

Rebbetzin Goldy Plotkin will share what Judaism has to offer on human sexuality.  Plotkin is a mentor to the Jewish community and the co-founder of Chabad of Markham, Ontario.  She leads seminars on marriage, relationships and parenting. 

Following Rebbetzin Plotkin’s presentation, Dr. Wasserman will lead a discussion and give attendees the opportunity to engage in “girl talk” at a very adult level on the subject of sex and intimacy. 

Dr. Wasserman holds a Doctorate in Human Sexuality from the Institute in Advanced Study of Human Sexuality, San Francisco, California, and is AASECT (American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors and Therapists) certified. She is the past Director of the Board of ISSWSH (International Society for the Study of Women’s Sexual Health); Director of the Board of the recently formed ASSM (African Society for Sexual Medicine); member of ISSM (International Society for Sexual Medicine), and member of WAS (World Association of Sexual Health). She is a published author in peer reviewed academic journals and is a reviewer.

As a serious activist, Marlene is a committee member of the Sexual Rights Committee of WAS, past Secretary and board member of Genderdynamix, a NGO serving the transgender community of Africa.  Additionally, Dr. Wasserman works with SWEAT, a NGO serving the sex worker sector in South Africa. 

At the University of Cape Town Medical School in South Africa, Dr. Wasserman holds a part-time teaching position in Sexual Medicine.  She lectures on Sexual Health, Sexual Rights and Responsibilities all over the world.  She also serves as an advisor to a number of pharmaceutical companies, including Pfizer, Adcock Ingram, Novartis, Lilly. 

Dr. Wasserman is the author of three books on women, teen and ageing sexuality and relationships.  Her first book, Pillowbook (2007), became a bestseller and is considered a classic book on sexuality for women. She won a Pica Award for Excellence in Journalism and has authored columns in many national magazines and websites.

As the creator of the “Dr. Eve” brand, Marlene is a celebrity in South Africa media. She is a regular contributor to local and international television and to BBC radio.

She hosts bi-weekly phone-in radio shows that are simulcast nationwide. In 2011, “The Dr. Eve Show” won the MTN media award, South Africa’s premier media awards, in the category “Best Night Time Radio Show.”
