Community Service Corps Registration Extended

Westport Human Services Director Barbara Butler announced today that the registration deadline for the spring session of the 2011 Community Service Corps will be extended to Jan. 18.

The Community Service Corps is an after-school program available to sixth, seventh and eighth grade students. The program is funded by a grant from the United Way of Coastal Fairfield County as part of the Positive Youth Development Initiative.

The 2011 spring session begins on Monday Jan. 24 and runs through April 8.

“Facilitated through the Westport Department of Human Services in cooperation with the Westport Schools, the club is an opportunity for students to provide community service at local non-profit agencies while learning valuable job skills,” said Butler.

Student volunteers work one afternoon each week, Monday through Thursday from 3-5 p.m.  At the end of the 10-week program, there is a wrap-up event where student volunteers are able to reflect on and discuss their experiences.

Among the local agencies participating in this program are the Center for Senior Activities, Children’s Community Development Center, A Child’s Place, Town Clerk’s Office, Town Hall, Westport Children’s Library, Toquet Hall, Westport/Weston Family Y Aquatics, Westport/Weston Family Y Child Care, Westport Continuing Ed. Sports and Homework Club.

Registration forms are available on both the Coleytown Middle School and Bedford Middle School Web sites and will also be available at the Department of Human Services office, Room 200, at Town Hall.

A copy of the student’s medical form must be submitted with the application.

Agency placement is made based upon the student’s interests and on a first-come, first-served basis.
