Choosing the Right Tutor for your Child

As the school year passes the mid-way mark, many students may find they are struggling in at least one subject area, which could impact their chances of passing by the end of the year. When this happens, parents must face how to resolve the issue and give their child the boost they need so they don’t fall behind. One of the most effective solutions they can adopt is to hire a tutor. Choosing the right tutor is imperative, as it can make or break the entire experience.

“There are many reasons why a student may not be doing as well as they could be doing,” says Deborah Frati, Area Director of Club Z! In-Home Tutoring Services, an education company with over 400 locations across the nation. “Sometimes they’re just getting lost in over-crowded classrooms, and sometimes it’s just a lack of motivation. Whatever the underlying reason, tutoring can give a child the support they need to get over that hurdle and on the road to success in the classroom.”

  • Finding someone that offers a free consultation. During this meeting, the parents should discuss the plan that would be followed, ensure that the school curriculum would be used, and make sure that the tutor can accommodate their schedule.
  • Parents should always inquire about the qualifications one has for being a tutor. The ideal tutor should be an expert in their field, have successful tutoring experiences, and have passed a criminal background check.
  • During the evaluation and selection process of choosing a tutor, the child should be involved. It’s important that they like the person they will be working with, so their personalities will need to sync.

“Whether a child is struggling with one subject or all of them, they can greatly benefit from a good, qualified tutor,” adds Frati. “Matching the student with the right one-on-one tutor can make a difference, this school year, as well as for the rest of their educational experience.”
