Congressman Himes to Attend Maker Faire in Westport

A large tent was set up on Jesup Green outside the Westport Library Wednesday morning in preparation for Connecticut's second Mini Maker Faire, which will take place Saturday from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Joined by state and local officials, Congressman Jim Himes will attend the second annual Westport Mini Maker Faire Saturday on Jesup Green.

The event will showcase creativity, resourcefulness and invention in a hands-on environment.

Connecticut’s second Mini Maker Faire, sponsored by the Westport Library and Remarkable STEAM, will run from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Congressman Himes is expected to attend the event around noon.

Westport Library Director Maxine Bleiweis said that Maker Faires are the new indicators of a different kind of economic vitality.

“Our workforces are getting into entrepreneurial mode. It makes sense that people like Congressman Himes, who concerned about our economy, would be very interested in the kinds of inventors, creators and thinkers that the Maker Faire will draw together,” Bleiweis said.

Last year, the event attracted more than 2,200 people, according to Westport Library Communications Coordinator Marcia Logan. The Mini Maker Faire is a family-friendly celebration of art, technology, science, creativity and the do-it-yourself mindset," Logan said.

Several exhibits will be setup up at the event, including a “KidVenture Lift Demonstration Booth” by the Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation. This will help kids learn, through a hands-on project, about lift and air foils from aerospace engineers, Logan said.
