Elvira's Food Vendor Petition Continues to Grow

Elvira's Old Mill Market & Deli, located at 222 Hillspoint Road in the Compo Beach area, has been open and paying taxes in Westport for 16 years.

Owner Nikki Boulas said it is unfair that out-of-town food trucks are allowed to sell their products at such a cheap rate compared to her local, tax-paying business.

"I just don't find it fair. They pay $35 for the year to come in and sell their food," Boulas said. "Lets make fair competition."

Boulas said she has seen six different trucks posted up in the Compo area, though they are not technically welcome at or near the beach.

The vendors will even park two or three houses down from Elvira's on Hillspoint Road.

The petition against these food vendors, which has more than 380 names on it, states that the outside vendors have been significantly hurting Elvira's business.

"There is no way for Elvira's, as a small mom and pop business, to compete with their prices as our overhead costs are greater, and we are a Westport taxpayer," the petition states.

Boulas said she hopes the Town of Westport will take action on the issue soon.

"The town did tell me that they are working on the situation so we will see what happens from there," Boulas said.

Do you think out-of-town food vendors should have to pay a higher premium to the Town of Westport?
