Children's Passover Seder

The Congregation for Humanistic Judaism (CHJ) will hold its annual children’s Seder in celebration of Passover on Sunday morning, April 1, 10:30 am, at Bedford Middle School, 88 North Avenue, Westport. This shortened model Seder is perfect for families with children.

Consistent with the practice of Humanistic Judaism, the model Seder contains the stories and elements of a traditional Seder and also offers modern interpretations of the meaning of Passover. The Seder will be followed by a brunch of Passover foods.

Reservations are recommended. Call (203) 226-5451 or email sundayschool@humanisticjews.org by March 30 to RSVP.

Humanistic Judaism emphasizes personal responsibility in fulfilling the Jewish ideals of loving kindness, justice, good deeds, and giving to those in need. These ethical ideals are shared by Jewish tradition and humanist philosophy. Humanistic Jews practice in personally meaningful ways, consistent with a modern understanding of the world.

CHJ is a cooperative congregation run exclusively by members, who plan educational programs, social events and holiday observances throughout the year. Because it is a warm and welcoming community, interfaith couples also find it to be the right place for their families.

Humanistic Judaism is the most recent group recognized as a major branch of Judaism by the United Jewish Communities.  The Fairfield County CHJ Congregation was founded in 1967.  Humanistic Judaism is now active in many countries throughout the world.

In addition to family-oriented events, the Congregation has a full calendar of activities for adults including Jewish holiday celebrations, Sunday morning Adult Education, Shabbat dinners, a wide array of Friday and Saturday evening programs, discussion groups, and a book group. The CHJ Sunday School provides a contemporary Jewish education for children in kindergarten through Bar/Bat Mitzvah.  Children learn about Jewish holidays, history, literature, and traditions of the Jewish people in a warm, participatory environment.  The curriculum is enriched by Hebrew, music, art, dance, and crafts.  Jewish and Humanistic values and their relation to interpersonal, social and environmental issues are explored in all areas of the curriculum.  Small class size fosters involvement and learning.  A supervised preschool playgroup is open to younger siblings 0-5 years of age. Sunday School registration is ongoing. More information about Sunday School, as well as contact information, can be found on the website.
