Looking for a Cool Graduation Gift? Head to the Library

After a decline in inventory for number of years, Westport Library's retail and cafe manager Heli Stagg started paying more attention to the line of stationary, toys and gifts available for sale last year.

"I like choosing items that are handmade and that tell a story," Stagg told Patch. "And I'm a big believer in upcyling, recycling and fair trade."

Although inventory is a bit low right now because she's getting ready to bring in new items for summer, Hagg said that patrons will find a variety of unique jewelry, bags, scarves and greeting cards similar to what you might find in a museum gift shop made from recyclable paper, plastic, metal, leather and even fruit.

Hagg said that most patrons gravitate towards electronic gadgets, educational toys and journals, but the most surprising popular item was originally meant to be a display prop.

"I was trying to add color to our display of planting kits for children, so I bought some gardening gloves and theyended up being the hot item," Stagg said.

Stagg added that patrons will find items as low as 25 cents and as high as $50.

"It's very important for me to offer affordable items," Stagg said. "In order for us to carry an item over $50, it has to be very special."
