New Westport-Weston Y Facility 'Topped Off'

A crowd of staff, supporters, and volunteers turned out Wednesday to celebrate the "top off" of the Westport-Weston Y's new facility at its Mahackeno campus.

The white beam that served as the crowning piece of steel within the structure's framework was signed by volunteers, donors, and staff. United Steel workers installed it Wednesday afternoon.

Robert Reeves, CEO of the Y, was happy to be celebrating the top-off milestone.

"Elation is what comes to my mind -- for the community and for the volunteers, who have labored for this for years," Reeves said.

The project is "on schedule and on budget" to be completed in September 2014, Reeves said.

The current Y facility in the center of town will be sold in 2014 to Bedford Square Associates, which plans to create a complex of retail, residential, restaurant and office use of the space.
