Protecting Westport From Invasive Plants

Conservation Director Alicia Mozian reminded the public to participate in the continuing effort by the Conservation Department to address the spread of invasive plants.

Mozian is asking once again for Westport residents to help her identify and prevent the further spread of invasive plants within the town and its surrounding neighbors.

“The Westport Conservation Department is focusing on the identification and eradication of Mile-a-Minute Vine (Persicaria perfoliata),” said Mozian.

In a cooperative effort with the Connecticut Invasive Plant Working Group, which has been monitoring and removing this plant since 2009 in Fairfield County, the Conservation Department is informing Westport residents of this effort and is asking for assistance in searching for this invasive vine, Mozian said.

Westport faces numerous invasive species. The Saugatuck River Wildlife Restoration Project, which began in 2012, is a four-year project designed to eliminate invasive plant species in the 3.2 acre Taylortown Salt Marsh preserve owned by the Aspetuck Land Trust
