Start Working out Now for Annual Running of the Booklovers at Library Sale

Westport Library's big, big, big booksale is a highlight of the year for many Fairfield County booklovers (the ones who don't get trampled).

Exercise those thigh and arm muscles, strengthen that back and practice your sprints, for the annual (unofficial) running of the booklovers at the opening of Westport Library's annual book sale is only two weekends away!

Exercise your brain the rest of the year with a selection of some of those 80,000 books at the sale (close to being of the biggest in Fairfield County). For now, exercise those muscles. You have until Saturday, July 19.

Here's what details about the sale the Westport Library has to tell you on its website:

Doors open at 9 a.m. (no prior sign-ups or place holding. Just wait in line.)

Saturday & Sunday, July 19 & July 20: 9-6
Monday, July 21: 9-6
(everything half-price)
Tuesday, July 22: 9-1 (free, donation appreciated)

  • Hardcover & paperback fiction & non-fiction
  • Vinyl records, DVDs, CDs, audiobooks & more
  • Children's books. By popular request, all our vintage and special juvenile books will be their own section inside the air-conditioned library.

  •  Bobby Fischer v. Garry Kasparov! Even though that match never happened, we have two signed books:
    Fischer: Partije.....Games....(etc.).  Belgrade: Sahovski Informator (1992). A paperback in excellent condition. Signed “Bobby Fischer” on the title page. (Comes with an authentication letter from a prominent dealer that Fischer signed the book in Budapest in 1996.)
    with Garry Kasparov and others.  Kasparov v. Karpov. Oxford, Pergamon Chess (1991). First paperback edition in excellent condition. Signed by Garry Kasparov on the half-title. 
  • Adam Smith. An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations. The fourth edition in four volumes (containing all five “books” of Wealth of Nations). Basil (sic): Tourneisen and Legrand, 1791. Published a year after Smith's death, this is supposedly the first continental edition and  contributed enormously to the spread of Adam Smith's ideas in Europe.

Interesting and important special collections of books and magazines:

  • Clocks and watches --- history, collecting, repairing. Includes the National Watch and Clock Collectors bulletin from 1978 to 2003.
  • Model Engineer and Amateur Electrician: a Journal of Mechanics and Electricity for Amateurs and Students. The British hobbyist magazine, a run of 58 issues from 1901 (#4) to 1963 (#129).
  • Classic and vintage cars, especially the Alfa Romeo.
  • Stage and screen, including many signed copies by performing art luminaries.
  • Playboy magazine, a few from 1960's, many from 70's and ‘80s,and also ‘90s and early 2000.
  • Gay and lesbian nonfiction and fiction.
  • Civil rights movement going back to the Freedom Summer of 1964, some signed, from the estate of Westport writer and artist, Tracy Sugarman.
  • From New York's prestigious National Arts Club, a major collection of books, including signed copies from authors who spoke at Club gatherings.
