Art with Betsy Beach

Art Classes for Kids kicks off again Feb. 23.

When you walk into Betsy Beach's art studio at her Wilton Road home in Westport, you hear classical music playing softly and see quotes from different artists posted throughout her house.

The inspirational and calm setting is a place children artists visit every week, though they are usually too excited to stay calm. The kids race through the door and don't seem to want to leave once class is over.

"I love the energy and enthusiasm that children bring to class," Beach said. "It is a constant joy to share in their creative development."

Betsy Beach has been teaching "Art Classes For Kids" in Westport since 2004. Her next winter session begins Feb. 23.

Working in a variety of materials, children are encouraged to explore the fundamental elements of picture making — color, composition and drawing. The projects are designed to help children develop fine motor skills, concentration and eye/hand coordination.

"Most young children begin drawing and painting about the same time that they are learning verbal language," Beach said. "It is often an important way for them to express and release their feelings while they are developing the ability to use words.  I think art continues to be important for children as they grow because it continually presents new opportunities for self-expression."

Though Beach teaches children, she believes art is just as important for adults.

"Art enables us to reach beyond our day-to-day world and give expression to our own unique personalities," she said.

Born in Ridgewood, NJ, Beach has lived in and around Westport for about 40 years.  She attended Skidmore College, Parsons School of Design, The School of Visual Arts and The New York Studio School. She worked for many years as a graphic designer, illustrating and designing books, stationery and gift products. Before opening her own studio, Beach was on the teaching staff at Paint, Draw & More! in Georgetown, Conn., where she taught children ages 4 - 15.

Beach said she loves "everything about art — the color, the poetry, the opportunity to give my spirit a voice." And, she loves even more the opportunity to share her passion with kids.

Her next session of "Art Classes For Kids" begins Feb. 23. Classes are limited to a maximum of six students, for a complete schedule and registration form visit Beach's Web site at www.betsybeach.com. A six-week session is about $180. Holiday workshops, private classes for individuals, groups, and special occasions are also available.
