LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION - Connecticut Student Film Festival Allows State Students to Become Moviemakers

WATERBURY- - Many teens dream of being the next Steven Spielberg. High school students across the state have submitted short films to the Connecticut Student Film Festival for a chance to win an award and have their movie shown on the big screen at the Palace Theater in Waterbury, Conn.

Submissions will be judged by a panel of industry professionals. Those declared finalists will be notified. The winners will be announced at the Film Festival.

The free, open-to-the-public festival will be held May 11, starting at 4:15 pm. It takes inspiration from true Hollywood film events. Finalists will walk down a red carpet, have their picture taken and be interviewed by student press teams.

Over the past three years the Film Festival, students have used the Film Festival as a chance to celebrate and share their work. They dress up in suits and dresses and enjoy posing for the cameras with their VIP laminates swinging proudly around their necks.

Categories for winning films include: the 90-SECOND Film Challenge, The CPEP Film challenge, Outstanding Anti-Tobacco Film, Outstanding History Short, Outstanding Documentary Short, Outstanding Fictional Short, a Parents’ Choice Award and an Audience Choice Award.

The subject matter for the films spans from the serious - teen bullying to the satirical a hilarious send-up of MTV’s vacuous show about teenage parties My Super Sweet Sixteen.

The Film Festival is presented by the Center For 21st Century Skills at EDUCATION CONNECTION, under the Connecticut career Choices state initiative.
