Screening of the film THE LARAMIE PROJECT

A screening of the film “The Laramie Project” will take place at the Unitarian Church in Westport on Friday, Feb. 11 at 7:30 PM.

Laramie, Wyoming became infamous overnight in the fall of 1998, when Matthew Shepard, a gay college student, was found tied to a fence after being brutally beaten and left to die, setting off a nationwide debate about hate crimes and homophobia.

“The Laramie Project” is a film in which the thoughts and opinions of Laramie residents from all points of the political spectrum are presented alongside re-enacted excerpts from the trials of the two men who attacked Matthew Shepard.  Based on more than 200 interviews conducted in Laramie, it follows and in some cases re-enacts the chronology of Shepherd's story. Real news reports are mixed with actors portraying friends, family, cops, killers, and other Laramie residents in their own words. It concludes with a Laramie staging of "Angels in America" a year after Shephard's death.
