Westport's Jewish Community Prepares for New Year

Leading up to the high holidays, which begin on Rosh Hashanah on Sept. 8, members of local synagogues celebrated at the Levitt Pavilion on Saturday night.

With the High Holidays only one day away, a Selichot concert was held at the Levitt Pavilion on Saturday night. The Selichot are Jewish penitential poems and prayers. They are especially said in the period leading up to the High Holidays and fast days.

Israel-based "The Shuk" performed on stage. The group was formed in 2008 as a way to for artists to boost the revival of Jewish culture in Europe. Since then, the group has travelled throughout the world with their blend of musical performances, workshops and lectures.

The concert was hosted by the  , Congregation Beth of Norwalk and Beit Chaverim Synagogue of Westport with additional support from Camp Ramah New England, Congregation for Humanistic Judaism, Israelis in Connecticut, The Jewish High School of Connecticut, Norwalk Hadassah and Westport/Weston Chapter of Hadassah, UJA/Federation of Westport, Weston, Wilton and Norwalk, and, with sponsorship from the Schloss family in memory of their son Andy Schloss.

Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish new year, lasts from sunset on Sept. 8 to sunset on Sept. 10. There will be no school on Sept. 9 due to the holiday.
