Unite Women CT has organized a Rally on Saturday April 28, 2012 from 10am-2pm at Bushnell Park in Hartford, CT. It is part of a nationwide, nonpartisan grassroots effort to gather people who support women's rights and speak out against the spate of bills and laws targeting women's healthcare and basic rights. There will be similar rallies, gathering tens of thousands of people, in each state across the nation on the same day.

Hartford, CT – Several months ago, a rallying cry went up for women and men to gather on April 28, 2012 in every state capitol and Washington, DC, to say "Enough is enough!"

A small group of friends and strangers on Facebook started discussing the increasing number of alarming anti-woman legislation that was being proposed and passed across the United States. This small group of people blossomed into over 20,000 members who decided to hold marches and rallies throughout the country. Their message was simple: aggressively limiting women's health care access and choices will get you elected out of office. Trying to redefine 'rape' and limit the effectiveness of violence against women laws will not silence us. Ending equal pay laws will bring the Equal Rights Amendment back onto the national stage. Women will not be sent back to the Dark Ages and taking away women's rights will do nothing to help the struggling jobs market, the environment, or the other very real issues facing our nation.

In Connecticut, two women who had never met decided to organize the Unite Women CT Rally at the state capitol. Carolyn Stearns is the manager of Evolution Pilates Studios which is comprised of 3 facilities that promote health and wellness. Amanda Kaplan is a stay-at-home mother from the shoreline who has always advocated for women's rights and equality for all. She received her JD from the University of Connecticut School of Law and practiced law in Manchester and Guilford. Carolyn and Amanda have been joined by passionate women's advocates, reproductive justice organizations, and people who work in a variety of businesses and professions throughout the state, to plan an entertaining and informative rally at the Pavilion in Bushnell Park in Hartford on April 28, 2012 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Their messages are diverse but boil down to the following Call to Action:

  • Stand up! Speak out! Vote!
  • Educate yourself
  • Communicate with elected officials and candidates
  • Register to vote and vote in every election
  • Get involved – Run for office!
