Sally...don't lose your groove!

Look good! Feel great! Have Fun! Fitness tips for those 40+ and looking to stay healthy. We drink wine, we eat chocolate and we find time to exercise.

Yesterday after class, a regular participant, let’s call her “Sally”, came up to me in tears.  At first I thought, “Wow! She really hated that,” but then I realized that something else was deeply troubling her.  She explained that she was recently left at the altar by the man she thought she would spend the rest of her life with and she was obviously devastated. Through her tears she said, “Move.  I’m telling you this because I feel such a connection to you.”  And she continued, “Should I keep exercising?” and then sobbed, “Am I pretty?”

I’m telling this story for several reasons.  First because it reminded me that at one time or another in our lives we all lose our groove, and we may need some help to get it back, and second, because Sally is over 60 years old, IS pretty and youthful, is a fabulous dancer, loves all types of music and generally rocks it out in every class–which means a major setback can happen to anyone! It’s also important to note that although she and I don’t socialize outside of class I feel a connection to her as well.  That’s one of the most amazing things about a dance/fitness class set to great music–it forges an incredible connection between everyone in the room because we are all drawing off of each others energy and sharing our fun on a much deeper level than we do when we are out to dinner with friends for example.  So I completely understood that she felt a need to share her pain with me.  

Toward that end, all the great fitness instructors out there connect like this with their students and can be there to offer whatever support is needed.  So if you have found an instructor that you connect with, excellent! If you are still looking, then keep up the search, because there will definitely be an instructor that you feel completely ”gets” you and understands what it takes to motivate you.  And finally, I answered her without hesitation, that “yes”, she should DEFINITELY keep exercising.  Fun Cardio, uplifting music and lots of sweating is probably THE best way to work out any type of frustration or problem–physically getting it out of your body and allowing you to put it behind you. So if you or a friend need some help getting your groove back, get back to class, or visit me on YouTube, at “therealmove” and we will pump up your spirits together.  Just remember, we all need to lean on each other once in awhile, and we all need to keep spreading the joy!
