The Veterinary Cancer Center Sponsors 1st Annual Vet Olympics

The 1st Annual VCC Vet Olympics event in the greater MetroNY area benefitting the Animal Cancer Foundation will take place on Sunday, October 6, 2013 at The Sportsplex of Fairfield from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.

The fun-filled, social event for metropolitan area veterinarians & support staff will feature teams of five (5) competing in friendly games to earn bragging rights as Best on the Field.  Participating teams will enjoy an evening of fun, laughter and refreshments as they forge bonds in the community and draw public attention to the similarities between pet & human cancer prevention, research and development of effective treatments. Donations go to the Animal Cancer Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to finding a cure for cancer by funding research in comparative oncology, the study of naturally occurring cancers in pets and people.

According to Barbara Cohen, Executive Director of Animal Cancer Foundation, estimates are that one in four dogs and one in five cats will experience some form of cancer in their lifetimes.  “Veterinarians are a very important resource in diagnosing cancer in our pets as early as possible, “ Cohen says “as in people, early detection is a key component of successful treatment.   As an organization, we urge the pet owning community to know the warning signs of cancer and to bring their pets to their local vets for annual examinations.”

Animal Cancer Foundation says it is grateful to corporate sponsors like The Veterinary Cancer Center and to all the local Connecticut veterinarians who are so supportive of comparative oncology research.  “Veterinarians are among the first to recognize that the sharing of knowledge between the human and veterinary oncology communities is of vital significance to cures for pets and people.”
