3rd Annual Chowdafest Competition

Chowdafest is a fun, flavorful competition that invites each participant to vote for his or her favorite traditional New England clam chowder, favorite creative chowder and favorite soup or bisque. More than 20 different chowders and soups will be available for sampling.

The 3rd annual Chowdafest competition will be held on Saturday, February 5, 2011 from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. at Bedford Middle School, 88 North Avenue, Westport. The event raises money for The CT Food Bank, a private, nonprofit organization with the mission of alleviating hunger in our state, and other local organizations.

Adult admission is $6, reduced to $5 for bringing a canned food item that will also be donated to the food bank. Admission for children under 12 is $2. Last year’s Chowdafest brought in enough money and canned food for The CT Food Bank to provide 15,000 meals.

“We chose to hold this year’s Chowdafest in February to benefit The CT Food Bank. Most people think of donating around the holidays, so supplies can be sparse in the late winter months,” said Jim Keenan, chairperson of Chowdafest. “By holding this event in February, we hope to bring fresh supplies to the hungry plus some fun to winter-weary local residents. Our restaurant partners are enthusiastic supporters of our cause and generous donors of their time and culinary talents.”

Something for Everyone

Chowdafest is a child-friendly event that counts children’s votes as well as adult votes. In the past, some restaurants catered to the kid demographic with pizza- and macaroni-and-cheese- flavored soups.

Chowdafest also includes a ‘Kids’ Cove’ featuring temporary tattoos, stickers and activities such as decorating chefs’ hats. Additionally, mascots from local sports teams such as the Sound Tigers will be on hand to provide entertainment.
