Westport's Garelick & Herbs Moving to Southport

The gourmet food market will move from 1799 Post Road E in Westport to 3611 Post Road in Southport, less than a half mile away.

Westport's Garelick & Herbs location will be moving into Southport, providing the area with both a new food market and a way to get rid of the blighted property that's been sitting at 3611 Post Road for years.

The structures on the property -- once home to a now-abandoned nursery -- will be demolished to make way for a 5,325-square-foot retail space, according to a report in the Westport News.

The proposal from Garelick & Herbs received rave reviews at Tuesday's Planning and Zoning Commission meeting in Fairfield. Members of the commission voted unanimously to both change the zoning classification of the property from industrial and residential to commercial, and unanimously permitted the construction of a retail building.

Blight has been a point of discussion in Fairfield recently. Chief Building Official and Blight Prevention Officer James Gilleran approached the RTM late last winter to discuss allocating funds to speed up the remediation and demolition of blighted properties, like the one Garelick & Herbs will soon take over.

Garelick & Herb's Westport location is 1799 Post Road E, less than a half mile away from the proposed Southport site. The gourmet food chain has also has stores in New Canaan and Greenwich.
