5 Things All About Westport: April 12

The start of the Civil War, FDR's dog and a fashion show.

  • The Westport Woman’s Club is putting on a tomorrow afternoon beginning at 11:30 a.m. The event is hosting by Mitchells of Westport. Food, music, door prizes and favors are included in the ticket price. More details can be found here.
  • On this day in 1945, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt died in office.  FDR’s favorite dog, Fala, was a gift from Augustus Kellog, a Westporter. The black Scottish Terrier was a constant companion of the president and was buried near FDR in Hyde Park, NY.
  • In other historical news, the Civil War began today in 1861 when Confederate forces fired on Fort Sumter in South Carolina. While Westport was far from the frontlines, the town is from the time period.
  • There's a seminar tonight at the Westport Historical Society on 25 Avery Place about long-term financial planning. According to the organizers, more than 70 percent of Americans 65 and older will need some type of extended healthcare, which could ruin their savings.
  • After yesterday's tempeatures well into the 60s, things will cool down today. There's a high near 56 with showers likely after 4 p.m. Tonight, there will be a low of 44 with more rain.
