5 Things All About Westport: July 18

Library summer Book Sale continues; Grease sing-along at Levitt; more hot weather for Westport and more

  • The Friends of the ’s annual summer Book Sale continues from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. today, under tents on Jesup Green and inside the Library. Today all items are discounted 50 percent. The sale, one of three book sales the library holds each year (the other two, smaller sales are in December and March), offers fantastic deals on books, CDs, DVDs and other merchandise, including collectible items. Proceeds from the event are used to fund library programs. This year’s summer Book Sale featured more than 100,000 items. More than 650 people reportedly lined up for the sale’s grand opening on Saturday morning.
  • “Grease” is a classic, fun musical, practically a piece of Americana, and now you have a chance to sing along thanks to a new, remastered version of the film that displays the lyrics. This remastered version will be shown tonight at 8:30 p.m. at the Levitt Pavilion. So dig out that poodle skirt, find that old leather jacket and come experience “Grease” in a whole new way. The movie is free. Pre-film activities start at 7:30 including snacks, music, dancing and more. The rain date is July 25. “Grease” is being presented by Westport Cinema Initiative, a non-profit committed to building an independent movie theater in downtown Westport.
  • In case you didn’t notice, it’s been hot lately — but fortunately it hasn’t been that humid. That’s going to change today after some thunderstorms roll through the area. According to the National Weather Service Westport will see a high of 86 degrees (F) with humidity at a steamy 79 percent after storms roll through today. Other forecasts are predicting a high of 89 degrees (F). This is reportedly the beginning of heat wave sweeping across the country that will hit our area later this week with temperatures predicted to reach the mid 90s.   • An exhibit featuring the massive-scale works of environmental artists Christo and the late Jeanne-Claude, featuring two works in progress, “Over the River, Project for the Arkansas River, State of Colorado” and “The Mastaba, Project for the United Arab Emirates,” continues this week at the Westport Arts Center, 51 Riverside Avenue. "Over the River” is “a proposed site-specific installation of 5.9 miles of silvery, luminous fabric suspended high above the Arkansas River along a 42-mile stretch in south-central Colorado,” while “The Mastaba” will be made of “approximately 410,000 horizontally stacked oil barrels secured to an inner structure.” The exhibit runs through Sept. 4. Gallery Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday; and 12 noon to 4 p.m., Sunday.
  • The Westport Country Playhouse’s production of “Lips Together, Teeth Apart,” by Terrence McNally and directed by Mark Lamos, continues Two couples gather at a Fire Island beach house to celebrate the Fourth of July and end up revealing their anxieties about impending middle age and the world's hidden threats. “This hilarious account of people struggling against their limitations is as perceptive about the way we live today as any comedy the American theater has produced in years,” the Playhouse’s website states.
