5 Things All About Westport: June 10

Library gearing up for Summer Reading, Greens Farms Church celebrating 300 years, "Sabrina Fair" at Town Hall and more

  • This is the last Friday this spring that librarians from the Westport Public Library will be visiting students in grades K-8 in the public schools to promote the Library’s Summer Reading Club, which kicks off June 18. Every spring, starting in May, the Westport Children's librarians visit classrooms in the public elementary and middle schools to promote summer reading. They bring bags of books to share and distribute lists of popular summertime reads. Every year, more than 2,000 students sign up for this program. This year's Summer Reading Club theme is "One World, Many Stories."
  • The Green’s Farms Church, 71 Hillandale Road, which is celebrating its 300-year anniversary this month, will present an exhibit “Creations: An Inspirational Journey Through Art” from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday. This first-ever exhibit features the works of the church’s artists including paintings, sculpture, fiber art and a few surprises. The exhibit will be followed by the premiere of film “Remember, Rejoice, Renew: Celebrating 300 Years of Green’s Farms Church,” at 8 p.m. The 15-minute film is the story of Green’s Farms Church, as told through interviews with current GFC members.
  • The Westport Community Theatre will present “Sabrina Fair,” a comedy by Samuel Taylor, directed by Tom Rushen and produced by Joan Barrere, at 8 p.m. at Town Hall. The show, staged Thursday through Sunday, opened June 3 and runs through June 19. It is described as “a classic romantic comedy in the guise of a modern Cinderella fable set in the glamorous world of 1950s Long Island.” Tickets are available at the door.
  • Works of the winners of the Solos 2011 Art Show will continue to be on display today and this weekend at the Westport Arts Center, 51 Riverside Ave, in the main gallery. Juror Robin Jaffee Frank selected nine artists to be included in the exhibition: Miggs Burroughs, Westport, CT; Eric Chiang, Westport, CT; Megan Craig, New Haven, CT; Gayle Gleckler, North Salem, NY; Joan Miller, Westport, CT; Andrea Morganstern, Bridgewater, CT; Neil Ira Needleman, Katonah, NY; Lawrence Russ, Southport, CT; and Ivo Stoilov, Oakville, CT.
  • Shops and restaurants are great places to appreciate the works of local artists: Not only do you have time to soak in the beauty of the art while you browse or dine, the artists benefit from what might be considered a “captive audience.” In the Westport Art About Town series, which runs through June 26, the original works of area artists are on display in store windows and on restaurant walls throughout Westport's shopping district. All artwork is for sale. For more information visit http://www.artabouttownwestport.com.
