5 Things All About Westport: June 14

RTM meeting tonight; library talk on getting 'Fired at 50;' and about that non-profit you lost track of a few years back

  • The Representative Town Meeting will discuss and likely vote on a set of changes to the town zoning regulations known as Text Amendment 625 at 8 p.m. tonight at Town Hall.  The set of changes, which paves the way for the development of a senior housing complex and nursing facility on the Baron’s South property, was approved by the Planning & Zoning Commission last month, but a group of residents has signed a petition calling for a repeal of the changes on the grounds that they aren’t necessary in order for the town to get bids, as town officials have claimed. Should the RTM reject Text Amendment 625, which , it would be a setback for the Board of Selectmen’s plan to bring senior housing to the property, which after a year and a half is still just in the early planning stage.
  • People who are out of work these days have it really tough, in terms of job-hunting, but it is especially challenging for those over age 50. Tucker Mays and Bob Sloane, co-founders, principals and executive coaches with OptiMarket, will share insights from their new book, “Fired at 50,” from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at the Westport Public Library. They will present effective strategies that over-50 candidates can use to overcome the biggest challenges in this job market.
  • Did you start a tax-exempt non-profit of some type here in Westport a few years back…  and then forgot about it? Sixty-five Westport-based organizations have lost their tax-exempt status after failing to file informational returns for three straight years, according to the Internal Revenue Service. The revocations are among more than 2,100 statewide and 275,000 nationwide announced last week. The vast majority of those organizations are believed to be defunct, according to the IRS.   • Works of the winners of the Solos 2011 Art Show will continue to be on display today at the Westport Arts Center, 51 Riverside Ave, in the main gallery.
