5 Things All About Westport: June 17

Baron's South Committee meets, "Sabrina Fair" continues, Yankee Doodle Fair comes to town, and more

  • The Baron's South Committee will meet at 9:30 a.m. at Town Hall Room 309. The committee is expected to soon start drafting a request for proposal for bids for the Baron’s South property, where the Board of Selectmen hopes to build a 66 unit senior housing development, with 60 percent of units offered as affordable housing, as well as an 84-bed nursing facility. , this past Tuesday the Representative Town Meeting voted 24-5 to uphold set of changes to the town zoning regulations, known as Text Amendment 625, which paves the way for the project, pending a bidding process and local approvals.
  • “The Circle” by W. Somerset Maugham, and directed by Nicholas Martin, continues at the Westport Country Playhouse at 8 p.m. tonight. A scintillating and witty comedy of manners, “The Circle” seamlessly blends romance and repartee.   • The Westport Community Theatre’s production of “Sabrina Fair,” a comedy by Samuel Taylor, directed by Tom Rushen and produced by Joan Barrere, continues at 8 p.m. tonight at Town Hall. The show, staged Thursday through Sunday, opened June 3 and runs through June 19. It is described as “a classic romantic comedy in the guise of a modern Cinderella fable set in the glamorous world of 1950s Long Island.” Tickets are available at the door.
  • Shops and restaurants are great places to appreciate the works of local artists. In the Westport Art About Town series, which runs through June 26, the original works of area artists are on display in store windows and on restaurant walls throughout Westport's shopping district.   • The Yankee Doodle Fair, presented by the Westport Woman’s Club, continues today at 44 Imperial Avenue and the adjacent parking lot. All proceeds from the annual fund-raiser go back to the community. The fair features carnival rides, games, face painting, sand art, a raffle and prize drawing, and the Curio Cottage Thrift Shop. It also has an international food court as well as a Sweets & Treats Marketplace in the clubhouse auditorium featuring fresh baked goods. In addition various craft vendors will be on hand Saturday and Sunday. The fair runs 5 to 10 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, 12 noon to 10 p.m. on Saturday, and 12 noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
