5 Things All About Westport: June 29

RTM Ordinance Committee to meet, Westport Country Playhouse celebrates its official birthday today and more

  • The Westport Country Playhouse will be celebrating its 80th birthday today, with a special party featuring cake, champagne and balloons. The theater officially opened its doors June 29, 1931 and welcomed audiences to its first production, “The Streets of New York,” starring Dorothy Gish. Patch has a of the event, which will include theater staff and local and state officials.
  • The RTM Ordinance Committee will meet at 10 am in Town Hall Room 201. On the agenda is the review of a proposed "Regional Council of Governments" ordinance that would enable Westport to join a council of governments, if formed, within the Southwestern Connecticut planning region.
  • The exhibit “Westport Farming: Then & Now” continues to be on display at the Westport Historical Society, open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today. The exhibit, which opened in May and runs through September, is being presented as part of the Society’s “Back to Our Roots” festival. It features local farming artifacts, including a special section focused on Wakeman Town Farm, and chronicles “evolving local farming practices, from the Pre-Contact era/indigenous tribes, through the Colonial Puritans and Connecticut Yankees, to today’s return to local produce,” according to the Society.
  • Driving in Connecticut just got more expensive. Fees for all sorts of registrations, licenses, permissions and services are going up at Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles starting July 1, the DMV announced today. of the new fees, which we're sure you're thrilled to hear about.
  • Just reminding you once again that today is one of the last days for checking out the works of local students who entered into the , co-sponsored by the Westport Sunrise Rotary and the Westport Public Library. The works continue to be on display in the Library’s 1st-floor Riverwalk hallway this week. Students from Westport and Weston were invited to design a poster involving the Rotary’s “4-Way Test” of ethical behavior, which asks four questions of what we think, say, or do: 1) Is it the truth? 2) Is it fair to all concerned? 3) Will it build good will and better friendships? 4) Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
