5 Things All About Westport: March 1

A gala, a big day for the budget and Charles Lindbergh's baby.

  • Today is actually going to be a fairly nice day. The National Weathert Service predicts a sunny high of 41 degrees for Westport. There will be wind between 13 and 20 mph, with gusts as high as 37 mph. Tonight, it will be partly cloudy with a low around 28 degrees.
  • A gala benefiting Near and Far Aid will be held at Mitchells of Westport on Friday. The event will offer plenty of food, fantastic auction items and dancing. Most importantly, it will aid a local organization devoted to eradicated poverty in Fairfield County. Information about tickets can be found here.
  • If you want to have a say about the possibility of higher taxes or spending cuts in the schools, go to the Board of Finance meeting on Wednesday at 8 p.m. During the meeting, which will be at the Town Hall auditorium, the separate budgets for the town and the schools will be presented. Later this month, the board will decide whether to keep the budgets as is or demand cuts. A was previously published on Patch.
  • Tragedy struck one of Westport's most famous inhabitants on this day in 1932. Charles Lindbergh's 20-month-old baby was kidnapped, attracting national attention and a media frenzy. The baby was found dead soon after. Lindbergh moved to Westport in the 1950s.
  • On this day in 1790, Congress enacted the first Cenus. The 2010 Census data will be trickling out in the coming weeks and should paint a clear picture of Westport's demographics.
