5 Things All About Westport: March 21

Various happenings in Westport government.

  • It's a big week for the Westport budget. The Board of Finance will meeting Tuesday, possibly Wednesday and Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in Town Hall. The elected officials will to the budget. Your taxes, your schools and even the cleanliness of your parks could be affected.
  • There's a poignant remembrance of 9/11/01 scheduled for tomorrow. Family members and friends of those lost in the attacks can assemble digital memorials of their loved ones at a workshop at the Westport Library from 10 a.m.- 3 p.m. .
  • The Board of Education meets tonight, and while they will not be discussing budgetary matters per se, they will weigh on some big financial decisions. A contract with the school nurses and health assistants is on the table. These contracts have become a tricky issue in Westport, as health insurance and pension costs have in the past few years.
  • Westport (and a number of other Fairfield County towns) were the recipients of a unique federal grant that aims to curb energy consumption. The campaign will be kicked off . Learn how you can help at 7 p.m.
  • On this day in 1963, Alcatraz prison closed in San Francisco. The first maximum-security prison became a tourist location and the locale for a Nicolas Cage film.
