Aquarion Water Warns of Phone Scam

Aquarion Water Company, Westport's water supplier, is warning customers of a new telephone scheme that led at least one person to give out personal information to a scam artist.

According to a statement from the company, a Darien resident recently received a call from a man who told him he could lower his water bill by switching providers, as is possible with electric utilities.

When the customer agreed to the supposed deal, he was asked for several pieces of personal information—including his Social Security number and home address—which he supplied.

But, as the resident later learned, there are no other water providers currently available in the area.

"Aquarion is advising its customers that no legitimate offers of alternative service are being offered in Fairfield County," the company warns. "In addition, people should be wary whenever a solicitor calls with any kind of offer and then asks for a Social Security number or any other personal or financial information."

The notice comes on the heels of a Connecticut Light & Power warning to customers not to show their electric bills to third parties and to avoid door-to-door solicitors claiming to work for the company.
