During a press conference at the Spotted Horse Tavern the Bedford Square Associates will share their plans for the Bedford Square Project, which will take the place of the YMCA’s property at 59 Post Road East.
The YMCA property could be the location of a new mixed-use downtown shopping complex. The Bedford Square Associates already have a contract to buy the YMCA building when the organization moves to its new Mahackeno location in 2014.
Last year the Planning and Zoning Commission rejected an application by the Bedford Square Associates to re-zone the property at 35 Church Lane, which is owned by the Bedford Square Associates and located adjacent to the YMCA.
The Bedford Square Associates attempted to re-zone 35 Church Lane from Restricted Office-Retail District to Business Center District. According to Westport Planning and Zoning Director Larry Bradley, the Restricted Office-Retail District preserves smaller buildings and is designed to provide a barrier for residential areas around downtown.

Some Westporters were in favor of revitalizing downtown with major changes like the Bedford Square Project, while other locals thought the project might change Westport in a negative way.
David A. Waldman, a Bedford Square Partner and President of David Adam Realty, previously said the zoning change was necessary in order to combine the two lots and provide one unified underground parking lot in addition to various residences that cannot exist under the current zoning.
