Fire Department Chief Andrew Kingsbury Sworn In

The veteran of the departments takes over for retiring chief Christopher Ackley.

To a crowd of more approximately 100 friends, family and firefighters, Andrew Kingsbury was sworn in as the Westport Fire Department’s chief.

Kingsbury, 47, is a 24-year veteran of the force and a father of three. He previously served as assistant chief and training officer. He said he had no aspirations to be chief when he joined the force,  but is grateful for everything he learned from his superiors.

The ceremony was also a celebration for the three decades that Christopher Ackley, the former chief, worked in the fire department. He said he’s uncertain what he’ll do next

Ackley stated in July 1978, the same day that Al Fiore, now Westport’s police chief, started the job. The two have worked closely together to coordinate the departments during emergencies.

“I’ll miss him. I really will,” said Fiore. “He’s been a great guy to work with.”
