Jazz-Inspired Works of Art

The latest WACky Arts Extravaganza focused on the current collection of photographs by jazz musician Milt Hinton.

Children of all ages came together Sunday for the WACky Arts Extravaganza at the Westport Arts Center to make jazz-inspired works of art.

The event is a part of the Art Center's WACky Family Sunday series,  which offers families an affordable, interactive and educational afternoon of art-making.  WAC's Director of Education, Danielle Cavanna, has been pleased with the turn out for each event.

"We offer several drop-off art programs for children throughout the year but many parents wanted an event where they could join their children to make art and spend time together," she said. "So we started the WACky Arts Extravaganza and have had overwhelming success.  We had over 80 children here in October and have a full house today, despite the cold, snowy weather."

The event, held several times a year, integrates current exhibitions with art projects for children and their families.  This Sunday's event was inspired by the current collection of photographs by jazz musician Milt Hinton, which feature photographs from a lifetime of playing jazz.

The next WACky event will be held March 7 and will include a day of making sculptures from recycled, found and broken objects and turning them into works of art.  The individual pieces will then be assembled into larger installations by local Westport artists.  The series of sculptures created by Westport children, parents and artists will be on display throughout the month of March.
