Major Storm to Bring Flooding Rains

Westport Weather Whiz Jacob Meisel reports.

We have a major storm coming towards the region, bringing with it very gusty winds, flooding rains, and even the potential for coastal flooding.

A light rain will start late Friday morning to early afternoon, and we will not go back from there.  The rain will become moderate Friday night, then weaken a little on Saturday as the first storm moves up through the Great Plains.  This sets the stage for the monster storm mainly Saturday night into early Sunday morning.

The worst of the rain will begin to arrive around noon Saturday, along with the winds.  Between 6 p.m. and 2 a.m. Saturday should probably be the worst with not only heavy rains but very gusty winds as well.  I am not able to rule out a thunderstorm or two as well, as one could certainly roll through.

By around 5 or 6 a.m., precipitation should begin to move out.  Overall, Saturday evening and through the overnight we could suffer severe flooding, winds of up to 60 mph that could result in downed trees and a coastal surge that could get up to the Post Road Bridge and Main Street.  It will be a wild storm that could cause potentially long-lasting impact.

Do not be surprised if it knocks out power for more than a day or more, or if roads have to close because of downed trees.  The storm path is very interesting as instead of heading out to sea like most storms, it coms right up the coast and then goes inland over New Jersey.  This storm really does not seem to like New Jersey, and they may get a lot of damage from this as well.  Sunday the storm should move out or only remain as light rain showers throughout the day.

Historically speaking, the precipitation normally gets out of the region fairly fast.  Slightly colder air will filter in behind the storm, but no drastic changes here.  For now, we have a major storm, potentially a cyclone as some may call it, that will be making landfall near the region.  Stay tuned!
