Man Who Led Westport Police on Chase Gets One Year in Prison

Westport Police captured Thomas Gardner of New Bedford, Mass. after a five-hour manhunt on November 9.

A New Bedford, Mass. man who in November led police on a through Fairfield and , followed by a manhunt in downtown, has reportedly been sentenced to one year in prison after pleading guilty to charges of assault on a public safety officer and engaging police in pursuit.

According to a report in the Stamford Advocate, Thomas Gardner, 35, was sentenced to one year for each offense, to be served concurrently, earlier this week at state Superior Court in Norwalk.

As reported on Westport Patch Gardner attempted to elude Fairfield and Westport police in a stolen vehicle on local roads and on I-95 at speeds of up to 100 miles per hour.

While driving through Westport he reportedly struck a Bentley Continental GT Convertible, then abandoned the stolen car behind the and fled.

Police reportedly used search dogs to try to locate Gardner, who was found several hours later in a vehicle at Westport’s Playhouse Square Shopping Center.
