UPDATE: Obama Arrives in Westport; Secret Service, Police Secure Town

State and local police shut down Westport roads and overpasses while President Obama made his way from Sherwood Island State Park to the Stamford Marriott early this evening.

 

Update: 7:40 p.m:

President Obama's motorcade has arrived at fundraiser.

He was escorted by more than a dozen police motorcycles, several secret service Suburbans and various other law enforcement vehicles.

Obama passed by a group of nearly 80 cheering people at the corner of Beachside Common, which neighbor's Weinstein's home. The pack of supporters held signs supporting the president that read, "We Love you," and "Welcome to CT!" During the moments leading up to the first sight of the President's motorcade, the eager crowd began to cheer at the sight of approaching law enforcement vehicles.

A pack of marine helicopters flew over Westport at 5:15 this evening, including Marine One, the , where he connected with his motorcade that brought him to Stamford. 

A seemingly endless line of traffic stretched down Greens Farms Road this evening after State Police shut down I-95 southbound from exit 19 all the way to Stamford, where President Obama is attending a fundraiser reception at the Marriott.

Cars were detoured through Westport towards the Saugatuck on-ramp to I-95.

While many Westporters gathered on Greens Farms Road to catch a glimpse of President Obama, a Secret Service Agent told Patch that the entire road will be closed to cars and pedestrians prior to the President’s arrival to Harvey Weinstein’s oceanfront mansion – the location of tonight’s presidential fundraiser.

Although there is no set time for the president’s arrival, the event in Stamford is scheduled to end at 7:30 p.m.

If you thought you might have been able to check out the private gathering from your sailboat or yacht, you would have encountered a United States Coast Guard vessel, which has been on patrol in front of Weinstein’s colonial home since this morning.

Furthermore, the Sherwood Island Connector was closed following the president's arrival, along with both I-95 overpasses in the Greens Farms area.
