Tornado Watch Issued for Westport Until 5 a.m., Power Outages Begin

As Hurricane Irene approaches, here's the latest news for Westport.

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for Westport until 5 a.m. Sunday as Hurricane Irene moves into the area and localized power outages have begun.

About 50 people are without power in the Westport area, according to several reports. 

Town officials have also urged residents who live near the shore — storm surges of 4-6 feet are expected — to bring cars to higher ground. The Exit 17 commuter lot is available.

Hurricanes may cause tornadoes to form in the rainbands, most frequently in the outer right quadrant of the storm. Here are some tips for staying safe, if your area is under a tornado watch or warning.
