Westport Flooded After Heavy Rainfall, 3 People Evacuated [Update]

Roads are beginning to reopen, but basements are flooded.

Heavy rain, melting snow and the tide caused flooding throughout Westport on Monday, forcing several evacuations.

The neighborhood of Woods Grove Road, off of Canal Street, was hit hard. The island is flanked by Willow Brook and the Saugatuck River, and flooding in one section was too deep for even the mail carrier to make an attempt. One car in the deepest section was abandoned and not even a tow truck could access it.

“It’s unbelievable,” said Jesse Schomer, who lives on the street.

A Connticut Light & Power truck did brave the flooded section successfully, with water reaching as high as its bumper (see video). The Westport Fire Department said three people were evacuated and brough the Westport Center for Senior Activities.

The fire department asked CL&P to shut off the power to three homes that had major flooding in the basement.

Bob Galan, a member of the Westport Representative Town Meeting who lives in the neighborhood, said that flooding hasn’t been this bad for four years. Most of his neighbors have sump pumps, he said, but those are ineffectual when dealing with such massive amounts of water.

He knew things were going to be bad last night.

“I woke up at 1:40 a.m. and heard the rushing water,” he said.

Correction: A previous version of this story incorrectly said that the truck was from the Westport Department of Public Works.
