Westport Under Flood Watch Again

The National Weather Service warns that saturated ground and ice jams may exacerbate conditions.

A flood watch is once again in effect for Westport and surrounding areas as a storm system capable of dumping one to two inches of rain rolls through the region Monday.

The precipitation is expected to continue throughout the day, with thunderstorms possible in the afternoon and evening.

"This rainfall combined with the nearly saturated grounds from the 1 to 2 inches of rainfall that fell on Friday will exacerbate the flood threat," the service warns.

"In addition, the recent stretch of mild weather and rain has allowed for the formation of ice jams," it adds. "The buildup of water behind these ice jams can result in flooding upstream as well as down stream if they give way."

The NWS calls for a high of 49° today and an overnight low of 29°. Winds are expected to pick up tonight, with sustained speeds of 16 to 20 mph, with gusts as high was 33 mph.
