Community Corner

Westporter of the Week: Janis Collins

Janis dedicates her time to serving on a number of local boards and committees and says that she is proud to be part of a community that cares!

Name:  Janis Collins

Occupation:  "We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give."  ~Winston Churchill

Agreeing with Sir Churchill, after 25 years in business management and leadership roles, I opted to retire from a highly successful career to devote more time giving to my family and community.  I have spent the last ten years raising my daughters, who are now both at Staples High School, and providing service on many local boards and committees. Currently, I am the Chairman of the Parks and Rec Commission where have I spearheaded several public/private initiatives and worked to improve public dialogue.  I pioneered the formation of The Friends of Parks and Rec to find private financing alternatives to important public projects, such as the rebuilding of Longshore's Golf Halfway House.  I also serve on the Board of the Westport Farmer's Market, am President of my street association and a candidate for The Board of Finance.

In addition, I am providing pro bono management consulting to several local small businesses - one a start-up, and the other a struggling small services business.  I am helping solve their business problems through creative and pragmatic solutions.

How long have you lived in Westport?  We have owned our home in Westport for 12 years, the first two years as weekenders while still living and working in Manhattan.  After 9/11, we decided to move fulltime to Westport, primarily because of the amazing schools, beautiful parks and recreation facilities, accessible community and manageable taxes.

Favorite place in Westport?  Compo Beach because it is a beautiful place to join with friends, seek out peace when you need it most and exercise. I am a runner, and can be found running around the beach area several days a week.

Why Westport?  Westport is one of the most beautiful places in the country, but more importantly we live here because of the community.  The people who live in our town are amazing - they are smart, caring, creative, involved, and open to all.  Earlier this year, I was in a locally owned pasta shop buying dinner for a friend in need, and the owner of the store told me that although he has several shops in CT, Westporters are always looking to care for others.  I think it is what sets Westport apart, and I am proud to be a part of this caring community.
