Westporter Speaks Out Against Billy the Kid Pardon: Associated Press

The famed outlaw is causing controversy in Westport and elsewhere.

An undisputed murderer may be getting a pardon. He has been dead since 1881.

The governor of New Mexico is considering a pardon for Billy the Kid, the famed outlaw who became a legend in the Wild West. There's a Westport connection.

William Wallace, a Westport resident, is a descendent of former New Mexico Territorial Governor Lew Wallace. Some say that Lew promised Billy the Kid a pardon if he testified against three men in a murder case.

As the Associated Press reports, William said there was no promised pardon by his ancestor. He added that pardoning Billy the Kid "would declare Lew Wallace to have been a dishonorable liar."
