Election Day Workshop Salutes Old Glory at the Westport Historical Society

Have you ever considered how you would have designed the nation’s first flag
had you lived during the American Revolution, or wondered what life is like in
the White House for the president and his family? Here’s your chance. Kids will
create their own flags and hear stories about life in the presidential mansion
Tuesday, Nov. 5, during an Election Day Workshop at WHS.

The program for ages 5 to 12 will also include electoral games, presidential
dramas, stories about family life in the White House and even the making of a
voting booth.

The first flags were produced after the Continental Congress approved a Flag
Resolution in 1777. Enacted a year after the colonies declared their independence,
the resolution stipulated only that the flag contain 13 alternating red and
white stripes and 13 white stars on a blue field. It did not say how the stars
should be arranged or the number of points they should have. One early version,
the so-called Betsy Ross flag, had the stars in a circle pointing outward.

So let’s see what you can come up with. The workshop will be given by
Elizabeth DeVoll, the WHS’ education director, who will help the kids design
and sew their own fabric flags.

Jane O’Connor’s book “If The Walls Could Talk” will be used to learn about
the quirks of some of our past presidents and how their families lived in the
White House.

Kids will bring their own lunches, but they’ll help bake and decorate their
own red, white and blue cupcakes.
