Westport Historical Society Presents: Holiday Gift Making… I made it myself!

The holiday gift-buying season is upon us, and the Westport Historical Society has a creative
solution for moms and dads looking for someone to watch the kids while they
shop.

On Saturday, Dec. 14, the WHS will host a holiday workshop where children
ages 5 – 12 will hand-craft keepsakes that make nice gifts for loved ones. The class,
which runs from 1:30 – 3:15 pm, costs about the price of a baby-sitter.

Westport Artist Elizabeth Petrie DeVoll, the WHS’ education director,
will show how to make wall and window hangings, rock paper weights,
fire-starters and pasta angels.

Who knew ziti and farfalle could look so cute?

The workshop will also get kids to see things in new, creative lights.
For example, a cardboard egg container, decorated, filled with lint from the
dryer and wrapped with a bow becomes a starter Dad can use to light a fire.

Vintage advertisements for products not even made today can be attached
to plaques using decoupage techniques; add some wire and you have a decorative
wall hanging.

And paperless may be the trend these days, but moms and dads can get
creative too. Thus, a rock paper weight becomes a “computer companion,”
something to remind them of their child’s affection as they tap out a note on
the laptop.

So, parents, let the WHS do the baby- sitting while you shop downtown Westport.

Cost: $20 per child, $10 for a sibling. Non-Members are $25 and $15 for a
sibling
