Interfaith Council Sponsors Program to Honor Martin Luther King Jr.

The Interfaith Council of Westport and Weston will present its annual program honoring Martin Luther King, Jr. at 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 17 at the United Methodist Church, 49 Weston Road, in Westport.

This year's program will once again feature young musicians, dancers, soloists, actors and clergy and will also be a tribute to Dorothy Bryce by her son, Scott, his wife Jodi Stevens, both Broadway actors, who planned and produced this program, and their son, Jackson.

Program highlights will include music by "The God Squad", a teenage jazz/rock group directed by Tom Wiggin (Greens Farms Congregational Church); Cantor Richard Silverman will perform his original song "The King is Dead" (Temple Israel); A Better Chance students Marquell Washington and Jahari Dodd will read poetry; Tisha Jermin and her Moving in Grace Ministry will perform a liturgical dance (United Methodist Church).

In addition, there will be a monologue given by Kimberly Wilson, actress (Norfield Congregational Church); songs by Shir Fun, a children's choir directed by Cantor Laura Berman (Conservative Synagogue); three musical numbers sung by an Interfaith Chorus; a violin solo by Sam Weiser (Conservative Synagogue); poetry reading by Rev. Frank Hall (Unitarian Church) and Rev. John Danner will sing the Blessing (Saugatuck Congregational Church).

There is no charge for admission but a goodwill offering will be taken to support the work of A Better Chance, a program that selects motivated students from educationally disadvantaged areas and offers them an opportunity to live in the Westport community and participate in its activities and attend Staples High School; and Janus House, in Bridgeport, which works with children in crisis. The offering will be divided equally between the two organizations.
